Chronic conditions

I am qualified to work with common long term conditions. Below are just some examples. Being active may help you manage your symptoms, help slow deterioration of your condition and prevent the onset of additional conditions.

Diabetes Type 1 and 2

Both types of diabetes are chronic diseases that affect the way the body regulates blood sugar (glucose). People with type 1 do not produce insulin and those with type 2 are insulin resistant.

Hypercholesterolaemia

High levels of cholesterol in the blood (>5mmol) and is often asymptomatic. Can lead to heart attack, stroke, chronic heart disease and other conditions.

Hypertension

Prolonged elevated blood pressure - 140/90mmHg or more. Can lead to heart attack, stroke, chronic heart disease and other conditions.

Simple mechanical (non-specific) back pain

Not attributable to any underlying pathology. Here the pain is mechanical in nature (gently changes with posture and activity), often direction specific. In most cases it is acute, and pain is gone/significantly eased within 6 weeks.

Mental health

I am qualified to work with people who are struggling with stress, anxiety and depression. These conditions may be stand alone or are often a side effect of another comorbidity.

Obesity

BMI of >30 is guide but not the only measurement that should be relied on when assessing obesity. Waist size can be a more accurate indicator in people who are overweight.

Osteoarthritis (OA) & Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

Arthritis is an umbrella term used to describe joint inflammation. Both OA and RA affect your joints but are different forms or arthritis. OA is primarily a degenerative joint condition and RA is an auto-immune condition.

Osteoperosis

‘Osteoporosis ('brittle bone disease') is a condition that weakens bones, making them more susceptible to fracture.

Chronic Fatigue & Fibromyalgia

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a disorder characterised by extreme fatigue or tiredness that doesn’t go away with rest and can’t be explained by an underlying medical condition.

Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterised by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease & Asthma

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is long term and irreversible airflow limitation and progressive airflow obstruction. It includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Asthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways. It can be a serious and long-term condition, but is episodic, treatable and reversable.
